Safeguarding Vulnerable Children in Myanmar

Hong Kong Committee for UNICEF, Hong Kong

The escalating conflicts in Myanmar have led to widespread displacement, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis among vulnerable groups, especially children. Numerous families have been forced into precarious living conditions in camps or host communities where basic necessities and essential safeguards are scarce. This displacement has severely disrupted children’s education, exposing them to various forms of exploitation and increasing their vulnerabilities to violence. Indiscriminate shelling, airstrikes, and the presence of unexploded ordnances have not only caused physical harm but also instilled a pervasive sense of insecurity and fear, hampering daily activities and economic recovery.

In this critical juncture, child protection must be prioritized in Myanmar. Strengthening collaboration between local and international stakeholders is crucial to raise awareness about the severity of the humanitarian crisis and advocate for increased humanitarian access and protection measures. Empowering community engagement through capacity development and mobilization will enable local groups to play a proactive role in protection efforts, helping to sustain interventions and create a protective environment for children and families.

In addition to immediate provision for education and nutrition, mental health and psychosocial support are essential for crisis-affected children and their families.

In partnership with UNICEF, ZeShan Foundation recently donated to support these vulnerable and crisis-affected children with improved access to protection supplies, risk mitigation information, as well as timely and safe access to protection services. UNICEF team is providing support for promoting positive mental health and holistic well-being among vulnerable children and families. Prevention of violence, including gender-based violence, could also be strengthened among the children in these communities.

ZeShan Foundation is committed to leaving no child behind in Myanmar. Through partnerships with international organizations and local communities, we will strive to assist crisis-affected children, wherever they may be, in their pursuit of safety, well-being and a brighter future.
