Ageing Population: Building Sustainable Public-Private Partnership

Big Silver Community [2017-]

GO BACK TO MAP

Big Silver Community, founded and led by veteran journalist Leila Chan (陳曉蕾), seeks to mobilize the Hong Kong society to innovate, experiment on and refine solutions on ageing issues through "solutions journalism" - reporting on what individuals and the society are doing in response to the challenges, and how / why these are working or not - as well as through experimenting with innovations itself.

This social venture is a response to the need for Hong Kong to prepare for an ageing population. It addresses the importance of strengthening community networks, the effectiveness of prevention and early intervention, and the link between poverty and poor health among older adults. It considers the three indispensable and inter-dependent elements to ageing well as “accumulating” network, wealth, and health (儲人、儲錢、儲健康).

The initiative includes:
  • Publishing Big Mag, Hong Kong’s first monthly lifestyle magazine on ageing issues such as healthy living, illness, dying, inter-generational integration, age-friendly community, etc. Each issue also includes a compilation and comparison of social, medical and other services across 18 districts.
  • Encouraging and facilitating readers to follow up on issues raised in Big Mag through discussion and action.
  • Facilitating the building up of a platform and community networks through collaborating with neighbourhood stores, NGOs, the business sector, etc, on the distribution of the magazine as well as organization of community activities.

The funding for Big Silver Community is itself a partnership between public and private funders, with co-funding by Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation, Ho Cheung Shuk Yuen Charitable Foundation, the Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Fund (SIE Fund), and ZeShan Foundation.
