Press Conference: The First World Hepatitis Day

July 28, 2011 marks the first official World Health Organization (WHO) World Hepatitis Day. ZeShan joined the Hong Kong Hepatitis B Free Foundation on July 27 to raise awareness and understanding of viral hepatitis and the diseases that it causes.

Dr. Yvan Hutin, WHO Medical Officer (hepatitis), Prof. Sam So, executive director of Stanford University Asian Liver Center, and Mr. Wangsheng Li, president of ZeShan Foundation were among the speakers at the press event organized by the Hong Kong Hepatitis B Free Foundation. They urged continued effort to combat HepB and highlighted the importance of an effective public-private partnership in public health. Members of high-risk and vulnerable groups are encouraged to get tested and vaccinated if not infected by the virus.

Over 375 million people are infected by the virus worldwide and 75% of them live in the Asia-Pacific region. Close to 100 million people in mainland alone are chronic carriers of the hepatitis B virus. The effective control and eventual elimination of hepatitis B has been a strategic focus of ZeShan’s work since 2006. Since then ZeShan has donated about HK$40 million for the cause.
