Sichuan Earthquake "Documenting Rural-Urban Alliance Model for Post-Disaster Community Reconstruction

The earthquake that struck Wenchuan in Sichuan Province, China, on May 12, 2008 was devastating. One of the post-quake community rebuilding projects that ZeShan supported was carried out by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangzhou  (SYSU), which set up a number of social work stations in Yingxiu township near the epicenter.

Adapting an asset-based approach, the team interviewed local villagers and identified the community’s strengths. With the help of social workers, local residents were organized to produce embroidery that inspired local culture as well as developed eco-tourism and organic farming. The social work team then marketed the products to affluent urban communities to create sustainable community reconstruction.

From the proceeds of the sales, the team helped set up the Yingxiu Mother Development Fund for those who lost their children and family members in the disaster. In the past 4 years, empowerment and community cohesion were significantly enhanced. The Yingxiu project was presented at the 2012 Joint World Conference on Social Work and Social Development in Sweden in July. Click here to learn more about the presentation.
